Park overview
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks for live area access
Bunya Mountains National Park is a cool-range forest park of about 19,600 hectares on the South Burnett / Western Downs edge of southern Queensland Country — bunya pine rainforest, hoop pine, woodland, natural grassland balds and range-top camps. Most first visits sample the Dandabah south-east hub (picnic, vehicle camping, Scenic Circuit) rather than “doing the whole park.” Full Barker Creek days, west-side lookouts and overnight camping are separate, deliberate choices. Use this hub to pick a focus, then open a deeper area guide.
Always verify live conditions on the official Queensland Parks park page and park alerts. This site is independent and unofficial. There is no public transport or shuttle into the park — private vehicle only via Great Bunya Drive.
Recommended order: plan the climb and fuel → pick Dandabah as first base → one main walk (usually Scenic Circuit) → decide half-day picnic vs full rainforest day → book camping only if staying overnight → leave west-side Grade 4 links for a second visit unless you already know the range.
How to choose an area
First visit, limited time: Dandabah for picnic facilities, Scenic Circuit (~4 km, Grade 3) and optional Bunya Bunya loop. Do not stack full Barker Creek on a late arrival.
Full rainforest day: Paradise / Barker Creek country for the ~10 km Grade 3 circuit (allow 3–4 hr). Needs an early start, water and mud honesty after rain.
Second visit or quieter camping: west side — Westcott, Burtons Well, Mt Kiangarow high point and Grade 4 links. Pack rubbish out; fewer facilities than Dandabah.
Before you lock any of the above: Great Bunya Drive access — steep, winding private-vehicle approaches, no fuel on the mountain, TMR caution for long/heavy vehicles.
A simple order on any day: fill fuel on the plains → climb with margin → pick one primary area → one main walk → picnic or camp tag → leave daylight for the descent.
Geography in plain English
Think of Bunya as a range lifted above the plains, not a multi-hour internal highway system. The south-east Dandabah hub holds the main picnic lawns, vehicle camping, public phone and the start of Scenic Circuit. A short drive along the SE road network reaches Paradise / Barker rainforest country. Further along the road network, the west side is quieter tent camping and lookout walking (Mt Kiangarow, Grade 4 links). Everything depends on Great Bunya Drive character approaches from the plains — Brisbane / Toowoomba via Jondaryan, Yarraman / Maidenwell, and Kingaroy / Dalby / Nanango sides.
Kingaroy, Dalby and Toowoomba are common service towns for fuel, beds and supplies. Mobile coverage is unreliable on the range — screenshot maps, alerts and camping tags before you climb. Official camping is pre-booked only; free day use does not mean free camping. Traditional Custodians have ongoing connection to this gathering place of bunya pines — this independent guide does not speak for them.
Fees and logistics that apply everywhere
No day-entry or vehicle-access fee was listed on official Bunya Mountains pages when this guide was re-checked (20 August 2026) — re-check parks.qld.gov.au. Camping is a separate statewide permit system (from 1 July 2026 schedule: $7.75 per person or $31 per family per night — confirm live). Rangers cannot issue permits on-site. Boot-wash at track entrances, ticks year-round, and falling bunya cones mid-summer to autumn under canopy are park-wide planning facts, not Dandabah-only footnotes.
