Half-day: Dandabah & Scenic Circuit
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
Climb Great Bunya Drive, base at Dandabah, walk Scenic Circuit (~4 km Grade 3, allow 1.5 hr), picnic, optional Bunya Bunya loop — without stacking Barker Creek on a late start.

You do not need a 10 km circuit to have a real Bunya day. This is the first-visit plan: one main walk, one picnic, and a protected reverse clock down the range before dark or fog.
Scenic Circuit packs falls, rainforest and Pine Gorge Lookout into about 4 km Grade 3 — allow 1.5 hours walking time on the official journey page (re-checked 20 August 2026). Bail-outs at Festoon Falls or the lookout keep mixed groups honest.
The drive is part of the day. From Brisbane, Queensland Parks commonly quotes about 260 km / 3.5 hours plus the final Great Bunya Drive climb. Fill fuel on the plains (Kumbia, Kingaroy, Dalby or similar). Screenshot maps, Park Alerts and a reverse “leave Dandabah by” time on town Wi-Fi — mobile coverage is unreliable on the range.
Always check Queensland Parks alerts and a regional forecast (Kingaroy-class, not only Brisbane CBD) the morning you leave. This itinerary is planning guidance only — not live track status.
Track status, weather, camping availability and road conditions change — verify on Queensland Parks and live road sources before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day use does not mean free camping or empty car parks on holidays.

Timeline
Night before
Alerts, fuel and reverse clock
Open parks.qld.gov.au/park-alerts/27047. QPWS has Scenic Circuit, through to Big Falls lookout from Dandabah day use, closed 6–9 October 2026 for track maintenance. If that alert is still current, do not walk it — picnic and Bunya Bunya loop only, and leave Barker Creek for another day. After 9 October 2026, re-check that the closure has lifted before treating Scenic Circuit as the primary. Plan a fuel stop on the plains. Pack tick kit, rain shell, warm mid-layer, water and snacks. Set a hard “leave the mountain by” time for the winding descent.
Leave the plains
Great Bunya Drive climb
Private vehicle only — no ferry or shuttle. Steep, narrow, winding sealed access. No fuel on the mountain. TMR cautions long/heavy vehicles; many visitors leave large vans in a gateway town. Check qldtraffic.qld.gov.au or 13 19 40" class="font-semibold underline-offset-2 hover:underline">13 19 40 if weather is bad. Do not burn the half-day on a long lunch en route.
0:00–0:25
Arrive Dandabah
Park at picnic / day-use without blocking camping access. Toilets, layers on, read track signs (distance, grade, time, precautions). Boot-wash demo at the track entrance (*Phytophthora* dieback etiquette). Public phone nearby if coverage fails. Confirm picnic tables and BBQs for later.
0:25–2:00
Scenic Circuit
About 4 km circuit, Grade 3, allow 1.5 hr: Festoon Falls and Tim Shea Falls with rock pools, strangler fig boardwalk, Pine Gorge Lookout over the South Burnett valleys. Steady pace on wet roots and steps. Bail at Festoon Falls or the lookout if kids or weather turn — reverse counts as success.
2:00–3:00
Dandabah picnic
Electric BBQs, tables, bins under bunya canopy. Eat food you brought. Do not feed wallabies or birds. Cool mountain air even in summer — keep layers handy. Optional Bunya Bunya loop (130 m, Grade 1) only if energy remains and reverse clock still has margin.
3:00–leave
Tick check + descend while fresh
Full tick check (especially kids) before the car. Fog and fatigue make the descent worse. Leave light margin. Fill nothing on the mountain — you already planned fuel. Screenshot was for the way up; still drive carefully down.

Parking & access tips
- Dandabah picnic / camping car parks — do not block camping access or bus loops if present.
- School holidays and long weekends fill day-use; arrive earlier or shrink the plan.
- Do not leave bags visible in the car.
- Public phone at Dandabah is backup, not plan A for navigation.
- Same hub as camping — a free day visit does not mean you can claim a camp site without a booking.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Full Barker Creek Circuit (~10 km) on the same afternoon
- West-side Grade 4 links “while we’re here”
- Severe weather or closed tracks on Park Alerts
- Unwilling to drive steep winding roads / empty fuel tank
- Starting after a late plains lunch with no reverse clock
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers from Brisbane, Toowoomba, Kingaroy or Dalby with a real half-day on the mountain
- Mixed fitness groups who want falls and a lookout without a full-day commitment
- Families who will protect a reverse clock down Great Bunya Drive
- Anyone arriving after wet weather who still wants a complete Dandabah day
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If Park Alerts show closures: shrink or change — do not invent off-track alternatives
- If the group is done at Festoon Falls: reverse without guilt
- If someone wants Barker Creek after lunch: only with elite fitness and early light remaining
- If fog erases Pine Gorge views: the rainforest walk still counted
What success looks like
- Everyone off the winding road before dark, still civil
- One clear Scenic Circuit (or honest partial) completed well
- Tick checks done; boot-wash used
- Notes for next time: earlier start, overnight camp, or full Barker Creek day
