West-side lookouts & Mt Kiangarow
Guide updated · verify Queensland Parks the morning you go
Mt Kiangarow high point (~2.3 km return, Grade 3) and optional Grade 4 lookout links on the quieter west side — not a first-hour plan after a late climb.

A different feel from the busy Dandabah picnic lawns: quieter trackheads, tent camping, grasstree ridges and high-point views when fog allows.
Mt Kiangarow is a short Grade 3 return (~2.3 km, about 1 hour on official framing, re-checked 20 August 2026) — mountain walking to the park high point (~1,135 m), not a rock climb. Stay back from edges in wind.
Grade 4 links (Koondaii, longer connectors) need fitness and a real return plan. Pick one main objective. Pack rubbish out; facilities are thinner than Dandabah.
Best as day two or a second trip after you already know SE hub logistics. Always re-check alerts and camping bookings if staying west-side.
Track status, weather, camping availability and road conditions change — verify on Queensland Parks and live road sources before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day use does not mean free camping or empty car parks on holidays.

Timeline
Night before
Maps offline + one objective
Screenshot west-side trackheads and camping tags. Agree: primary = Mt Kiangarow; optional = one Grade 4 only if weather and legs allow. Pack warm layers for wind and a Plan B if fog erases views.
Morning
West-side trailhead
Drive from SE hub or wake at Burtons Well / Westcott if booked. Same private-vehicle / no-fuel rules. Do not assume Dandabah phone signal patterns on every ridge.
Walk
Mt Kiangarow
2.3 km return, about 1 hour, Grade 3. Grasstrees and panorama when clear. If fog is thick, you still get the walk — reverse carefully; do not wander off-track for a “better angle.”
Optional
Koondaii or short link
Only if weather and fitness allow — Grade 4 is steeper. Most groups should skip and protect energy for the drive or camp chores.
Afternoon
Return or camp
Burtons Well / Westcott if booked — pack rubbish out, display tag, follow fire and wood rules. Or return to Dandabah / gateway town with daylight margin.

Parking & access tips
- Signed west-side / Burtons Well trackheads — do not block camping access.
- Tent camps: cars in sealed carparks; confirm product rules on official camping page.
- Screenshot maps before you leave gateway reception.
- Bins are not Dandabah-style — pack rubbish out.
Skip if short on time / energy
- First ever Bunya visit with tired kids after a late climb
- Thick fog if views are the only goal and you refuse a rainforest Plan B
- Collecting every Grade 4 link in one afternoon
- No warm layers on a windy high point
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Second visits and tent campers who want quieter nights
- Walkers who already know Scenic Circuit or Barker Creek
- Photographers chasing clear winter views with a fog Plan B
Fog and isolation
- Summit views can vanish — the walk can still succeed
- Help is slower away from Dandabah — carry more kit
- 000 needs reception; consider PLB for multi-link days
Camping honesty
- Pre-book Westcott or Burtons Well — no on-site permits
- Tent focus; pack rubbish out
- Wood BBQs only where permitted with clean milled wood — no timber collection
