Where you start
West-side / Koondaii trackhead (confirm signs)
Grade 4 — not a first-walk introduction.
How to get there
- Drive Bunya Mountains Road network to the signed Koondaii / west-side start.
- Fill fuel before ascent; screenshot maps offline.
How to do it (step by step)
- Assess fitness honestly — Grade 4 is steeper and rougher.
- Carry water, layers and tick protection.
- Return via the signed route; do not cliff-edge for photos.
What to expect
Shorter distance, higher intensity. Grade 4 means real steps, steeper grades and less “stroll” feel than Scenic Circuit.
How the day works
Pair with other west-side walks only if time and fitness allow. Start early; fog can cut views.
Hazards
Lookout edges, wet roots and timber, ticks, and longer wait for help if something goes wrong away from Dandabah.
Turning around
Turn around before steep sections if weather or fitness fails. Same path back is the safe default.

Extra tips
- Better as a second-day add-on after Scenic Circuit on day one.
Often paired with Mt Kiangarow— only if energy and weather allow.
