Mt Kiangarow track
Area: West side — Westcott, Burtons Well & Mt Kiangarow
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, camping availability, fire restrictions a…
About 2.3 km return, Grade 3 to Mt Kiangarow (about 1,135 m — park high point). Panoramic views and ancient grasstrees. Excellent short add-on from Burtons Well / west side.
Do not pair: Do not pair Mt Kiangarow with every west-side Grade 4 link (Koondaii, Cherry Plain) on the same first visit. Picnic + this return is enough.
Turnaround: Same path down. If fog erases the view you still had the walk — do not leave the signed line for a “better angle.”
- Treating Mt Kiangarow as a leftover after Scenic Circuit + Barker Creek on a first day.
- Chasing a cliff-edge photo when wind or fog makes the high point a turnaround.
- Grade 3 walking track
- About 1 hour (QPWS / common planning figure)
- 2.3 km return (QPWS journey page; re-checked 2026-08-20)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Highest peak views and ancient grasstrees — short west-side add-on
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Queensland Parks (parks.qld.gov.au/parks/bunya-mountains/journeys) and Park Alerts before you go.

Where you start
Near Burtons Well / west-side trackhead (confirm signs)
Short return to the range high point — re-check official start opposite Burtons Well picnic / camping.
How to get there
- Drive to the west-side / Burtons Well area via Bunya Mountains Road.
- Park at the signed trackhead; do not block camping access.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk the signed return to the summit / high point.
- Enjoy grasstree ridges and panoramic views; stay back from edges in wind.
- Return the same track.
What to expect
A short Grade 3 return to the park’s high point. The reward is panorama and ancient grasstrees, not a long rainforest tunnel like Barker Creek.
How the day works
Ideal after camping at Burtons Well or as a west-side morning before driving back toward Dandabah. Allow an hour plus photo time.
Hazards
Wind, sudden fog, and the usual tick/wet-track package. Not a place to chase edges for a photo.
Turning around
Same path down. If fog erases the view, you still had the walk — do not wander off-track for a “better angle.”

Extra tips
- Cool, clear winter days give the best long views; fog can erase them entirely.
- Pair with a west-side picnic — not with every Grade 4 link the same day unless fit.
Often paired with Koondaii— only if energy and weather allow.
