Barker Creek Circuit

Area: Paradise & Barker Creek country

Longer signature rainforest circuit (about 10 km, 3–4 hours, Grade 3) linking Dandabah / Paradise country: Paradise, Little and Tim Shea Falls, optional 750 m detour to Big Falls lookout (tallest waterfall, best after rain), and a grassy bald above Big Falls for lunch. Best full-day immersion.

Do not pair: Do not pair Barker Creek with Scenic Circuit as a same-afternoon stack, or with west-side Grade 4 links, unless you already know your pace and started at first light.

Turnaround: Skip the Big Falls detour if light or energy is short. Work back to Paradise or Dandabah. Stay on the graded track.

  • Stacking Barker Creek after Scenic Circuit because both start near Dandabah.
  • Omitting food, layers and a turnaround, then meeting Big Falls mud with fading light.
  • Grade 3 walking track (QPWS; re-check open status)
  • Allow 3–4 hr walking time (QPWS)
  • 10 km circuit (QPWS journey page; re-checked 2026-08-20)
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Fit walkers wanting a full rainforest day with multiple falls and a grassy bald lunch

Where you start

Dandabah picnic area or Paradise car park

Start/finish options: Dandabah picnic area, or Paradise car park about 2.5 km along Bunya Mountains Road from the SE entrance. Does not fully retrace. Confirm signed trackheads on the day.

How to get there

  1. Same Great Bunya Drive private-vehicle access as for Dandabah — no public transport.
  2. Paradise car park is roughly 2.5 km along Bunya Mountains Road from the south-east entrance; Dandabah is via the Bunya Avenue turn-off.
  3. Parking at both common start points. Screenshot maps — mobile coverage is unreliable.
  4. Fill fuel and buy water/supplies on the plains; treat any park water.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Boot-wash at the track entrance. Carry more water and food than for Scenic Circuit — this is a half-day to full morning of walking.
  2. Follow the signed Barker Creek Circuit through fern-carpeted bunya rainforest, a small eucalypt patch, fungi, and a grassy bald.
  3. Optional detour about 750 m to Big Falls lookout — park’s tallest waterfall; best after heavy rain (muddy otherwise). Many walkers lunch on the grassy bald above Big Falls when conditions allow.
  4. Wildlife notes: carpet pythons in sun patches, grey goshawks, wedge-tailed eagles, topknot pigeons. Complete the circuit or return via road sections if needed.

What to expect

Barker Creek Circuit is the full rainforest day: fern floors, bunya canopy, fungi after wet weather, a grassy bald, and a chain of falls. Paradise, Little and Tim Shea Falls sit on the main loop pattern; Big Falls lookout is a short detour to the park’s tallest waterfall — gorge and hoop-pine views when water is running.

Official pattern: about 10 km circuit, 3–4 hours, Grade 3. That is a real half-day once you add photos, lunch and the Big Falls spur. It is not a stroll for unprepared day-trippers who only packed a water bottle.

How the day works

Two common starts: Dandabah picnic area (link into the circuit from the main hub) or Paradise car park (about 2.5 km along Bunya Mountains Road from the SE entrance). Vehicle access and parking at both. You can walk shorter out-and-back variants or omit the Big Falls detour.

A strong operator day: early start, circuit with Big Falls if rain has been recent, lunch on the bald, back to Dandabah for a cold drink or picnic. Leave Mt Kiangarow and long west-side link tracks for another day unless you already know your pace.

Hazards and wet-weather realism

Everything on Scenic Circuit applies, plus longer exposure. Carry more water and food. Sections can feel steeper and more sustained. Carpet pythons use sunny track edges — look before you step. After rain the circuit is more beautiful and more treacherous.

Use the boot-wash every time — *Phytophthora* protection is part of walking here. Ticks remain a year-round risk. Treat all water; fuel or gas stoves are preferred where open fires are restricted.

Bail-outs and variants

Start at Paradise for different logistics. Return via road sections if a walker is struggling. Skip Big Falls if light or energy is short. Stay on the graded track — do not cut through rainforest.

If weather turns or someone is injured, work back to the nearest car park (Paradise or Dandabah). Mobile coverage is unreliable; Emergency+ needs reception to function. For remote multi-track days, a personal locator beacon or satellite messenger is a planning consideration, not a requirement for every picnic.

Extra tips

  • Most spectacular after rain, but mud and slip risk rise — choose footwear and turn-around time honestly.
  • Omit the Big Falls detour if short on light or energy.
  • Start at Paradise for different logistics or a shorter out-and-back feel.
  • Can be linked with Scenic Circuit for a long day — only if fitness and weather support it.

Often paired with Scenic Circuit— only if energy and weather allow.
