Why come here after Dandabah
Paradise and Barker Creek are where the rainforest day deepens. Fewer picnic lawns, more fern floor, more sustained walking. If Scenic Circuit was the introduction, this is the chapter people remember — and the one that punishes a late start or empty water bottle.
Treat this area as a primary objective, not a cool-down. The official Barker Creek journey page frames about 10 km, Grade 3, allow 3–4 hours walking time. That is a real morning before you count photos, lunch and the drive down the range.
Choose one spine for the day: full circuit, mid-length lookout return, or a planned link with a car shuffle. Hybrid fantasies that “just add” every falls detour after a slow climb are how groups finish after dark.
Signature and mid options
Barker Creek Circuit is the full day: about 10 km, Grade 3, 3–4 hours, woodland into steeper rainforest, multiple falls character, optional Big Falls lookout detour and a grassy bald lunch when weather allows. Start from Dandabah or Paradise depending on the signed variant and parking on the day.
Mid option: Barker Creek lookout / Tree ID — about 5.4 km return, Grade 3, roughly two hours. Enough rainforest commitment without the full circuit. Good when light is limited or the group is mixed but still wants more than Scenic Circuit.
Links: Dandabah–Paradise and Paradise–Westcott for people building multi-track days. Distances and variants change with signed routes — treat official maps as source of truth and arrange return transport before anyone walks one-way.
Cars, starts and bail-outs
Paradise car park sits about 2.5 km along Bunya Mountains Road from the SE entrance pattern — re-check signs and road conditions on the day. Starting at Dandabah and finishing at Paradise (or the reverse) only works if you have a pickup plan or accept a road return.
Using the road to return is sane if someone is struggling. Stay on signed tracks when tired. Junction confusion is the main self-inflicted problem on link walks — reverse to the last known signed point rather than cutting through bush.
Facilities are thinner than Dandabah. Plan toilets, water top-ups and rubbish around the SE hub before you commit to a long circuit. Pack layers: the range is cooler and wetter than the plains even in summer.
Hazards that matter here
Longer time on wet timber, roots and steps. Ticks year-round. Falling bunya cones mid-summer to autumn under canopy. Snakes on sunny track edges — give space. Treat any park water; better to bring drinking water from the plains.
Mobile coverage is weak along much of the circuit. 000 needs reception. Tell someone your plan and return window. After heavy rain, re-check Park Alerts for closures or track damage before you lock a 10 km commitment.
Big Falls character is often best after rain — which is also when mud and slip risk rise. Omit the detour if light or energy is short; the main circuit is already a full day for most groups.
Who this area is for (and who should wait)
Best for fit walkers with an early start, groups who already know Scenic Circuit, and overnight campers using Dandabah as a base for a day-two rainforest push. Not ideal as a first Bunya hour after a three-hour drive with tired kids and no water plan.
If weather is poor or the group is mixed, do Scenic Circuit well instead and leave Barker Creek for another morning. Turning around early is a successful day — not a failure.
Highlights at a glance

- Paradise, Little and Tim Shea Falls character on the longer circuits
- Optional Big Falls lookout detour (~750 m class — confirm signed distance on site)
- Barker Creek lookout / Tree ID (~5.4 km return, Grade 3, ~2 hr)
- Dandabah–Paradise and Paradise–Westcott links for multi-track builders
- Grassy bald lunch options when conditions allow
Practical tips
- Start early for Barker Creek — light and energy both matter after the climb.
- Omit Big Falls if short on time or the track is heavily muddied.
- Carry more water than for Scenic Circuit; bring food for a half-day out.
- Screenshot the track map offline before you leave reception.
- Boot-wash at every entrance/exit — dieback protection is not optional.
- Have a road-return plan if someone is slower than expected.
- Do not stack a west-side Grade 4 link after a full Barker day unless you already know your pace.
- Re-check Park Alerts after wet weather before you commit.

FAQ — Paradise / Barker
Short planning answers. Official Queensland Parks signs and park alerts always win over this guide.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I do Barker Creek after Scenic Circuit the same day?
Only if you are fit, started early, weather is kind and everyone still has water and light margin. For most visitors they are two separate ambitions. One solid Grade 3 walk is enough for a first Bunya day.
Where do I park for Paradise?
Paradise car park about 2.5 km along Bunya Mountains Road from the SE entrance pattern — re-check signs and road status on the day. Same private-vehicle access rules as the rest of the range.
Is Big Falls always flowing?
Often best after heavy rain. In dry spells it can disappoint — you may still get gorge and hoop-pine character when the spur is open. Confirm track status on Park Alerts and on-site signs.
Do I need a walk permit?
No permit for standard graded day walks such as Barker Creek Circuit. Camping is a separate pre-booked permit system. Always check open/closed status on alerts.
What is a good mid option if 10 km is too much?
Barker Creek lookout / Tree ID (~5.4 km return, Grade 3, ~2 hr) or Scenic Circuit from Dandabah. Both are real walks without the full circuit commitment.
